Hello Thomas Well done on getting to Organ Pipes. I have always found the solo thing rather daunting - I can say at least that it gets better each attempt, so hang in there for another go. One day someone is going to crack it solo and have somet...

Hi Thomas 15kg sounds like pain! How much food did you carry? Still, that's a strong effort, and hard luck on that mist (I'm so glad the weather played ball for us)! Interesting that you're in the pro-trekking-pole camp as well - so many folks swe...

Hello Thomas

There is a photo on this page of the gear I typically take with, but basically it is:
500ml water (but not the water sachet)
1x GPS with 3 sets batteries (= 17x3 hours continous usage)
Headlamp with no spare batteries (but it also uses the same AA batteries as the GPS so I could scavange if needed)
Whistle + tiny tube of sunscreen + roll of surgical tape + about 5 band aids + a few anti-inflamitories
1x tiny raincoat (folds into a fist)
1x long sleeve shirt
1x space blanket (the thin one that weights 20g or so)
About 20 energy bars / chocolates
150g crisps
1 box of biscuits
some dried wors
about 8-10 bags of rehydrate
2x game sachets
[no longer bother with the preccoked rice in the photo]
cellphone which is fully charged
I have also taken an iPod Shuffle, but never use it

i.e. the least amount possible to stay out there.

If I was to add anything, it would be (in order):
camera
down jacket
something to aid against the dogs (pepper spray or walking stick)
Clean pair of socks to sleep in
Beanie

Cheers
Andrew

ALONE AGAIN

Now I know why I haven't done the GT before. At the last minute all my would be partners have baled on me so I am left alone to go SOLO this weekend. Would any able bodied soul care to join me? I intend leaving for the carpark on Friday evening and setting off at 4am on Saturday. I would like to finish on Tuesday as I have to be back at work on Wednesday.

In case of emergency....?

Hi All
A friend and I were chating over an energy bar somewhere round Thabangwangwe and the topic of rescue came up. Every person entering the Drakensberg Park pays a rescue levy, which is used for the greater good when some poor soul lands in trouble. If however you didn't fill in the register or pay the Park entrance fee would the Rescue Fund still foot the bill? Worst case scenario, would the airforce send you an account? Last I heard an Oryx cost R27 000 an hour to run. Food for thought!

It is true

Yup, 6th of Feb is a tentative date. We intend starting with a large (8) group and then letting nature take its course. Want to join us? The group dynamics should make it interesting enough to forget about the pain!
